Born into the unforgiving landscapes of Lewa, Muwingu’s early days were marked by the relentless grip of the 2022 drought. As months passed without rain, the region’s human and animal inhabitants faced dire circumstances.
Elephants like Muwingu ventured beyond protected areas for sustenance, leading to increased encounters with local communities.
Caught in drought and conflict, Muwingu’s fate hung in the balance. Named “Muwingu,” meaning “cloud” in Swahili, she was discovered on the outskirts of Lewa, torn from her herd at 18 months old.

Alone and vulnerable, she roamed between Borana and Lewa Downs, her survival uncertain amidst the harsh conditions.
It became evident that she could not be reintegrated into a herd, as elephants, struggling to survive, cannot bear the burden of caring for a milk-dependent calf during such trying times.
The rescue of Muwingu was a collaborative effort, with Dr. Mutinda, a veterinarian from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), playing a pivotal role.

Sedated and carefully transported on a tractor-trailer to Lewa airstrip, Muwingu was then flown to safety by a team from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT). Upon arrival at the Nursery, Muwingu displayed an aggressive demeanor, indicative of her strong spirit and will to survive.
Although Muwingu took her time adjusting to her new surroundings, she eventually warmed up to the Keepers, forming bonds with fellow rescued elephants Weka and Kitich.
Despite their diverse backgrounds, these three young elephants share an everyday resilience and a tight-knit bond that sustains them through their rehabilitation journey.

Muwingu’s story is one of hope and resilience, symbolizing the enduring spirit of wildlife amidst adversity.
With the support of dedicated caretakers and companions, she embarks on a new chapter, fueled by the desire to reclaim her place in the wilderness and forge a promising future.
