Abby, a beloved family dog, mysteriously disappeared one day, leaving her owners searching desperately but without luck. However, a remarkable twist of fate led to a heartwarming reunion nearly two months later.
Jeff Bohnert began his morning routine expecting to be greeted by his two dogs, Summer and Abby. To his surprise, only Summer was at the door. Abby, a 13-year-old dog, was missing after playing outside. Given the sweltering heat that day, Jeff worried about Abby’s safety. He and his wife, Kathy, launched an extensive search, knocking on doors and posting photos online, yet no trace of Abby was found.

Fast forward to August 6, 2022, a group of cavers with the Cave Research Foundation were exploring the extensive Moore Cave System in Missouri. Led by seasoned caver Frank Keene, the team, which included several children, aimed to map the caves. Amid their adventure, a young boy exclaimed he had found a “puppy,” initially met with skepticism from the adults.
Persistent, the boy led the group to the bottom of a 12-foot pit where they discovered a motionless dog, much to their shock. Frank Keene and another caver, Rick Haley, sprang into action to rescue the frail animal. Frank quickly took a photo and emerged from the cave to get help for the challenging vertical rescue. He contacted Assistant Fire Chief Rob Calhoun, who showed the photo around the neighborhood, eventually identifying the dog and locating her family.

Back in the cave, Haley and Keene orchestrated a careful rescue operation. They realized the dog, too weak to walk, needed help to escape the pit. Haley found a duffel bag, lined it with a blanket, and encouraged the dog to climb inside, seeking comfort after her ordeal on cold stone.
Methodically, they lifted Abby through the cave, passing her carefully between them. “I’d hand her up, he’d set her down, he’d move up, then I’d move up, then we’d hand her up again,” Haley described. After nearly 90 minutes of teamwork, they finally reached the surface, where Rob Calhoun carried Abby into the sunlight.

Jeff Bohnert could hardly believe his eyes, holding Abby with tears of relief and happiness. He speculated that she might have stumbled into a sinkhole or undiscovered cave entrance. The news thrilled their daughter Rachel, who was away at college.
A week after Abby’s miraculous recovery, Haley visited the family again. Kathy shared that Abby was gradually eating more to regain her strength. Though still visibly thin, Abby barked—a sign of her recovery and resilience. “She’ll be okay!” Haley remarked proudly, having not heard her voice since the rescue.

With Abby back home, the family’s joy was testament to their unwavering hope and the kindness of strangers.
