On the crisp morning of November 29, 2023, the Amboseli Wildlife Sanctuary welcomed an unexpected visitor.
Ellie, a beloved member of the sanctuary’s elephant family, made a grand entrance with her playful three-year-old calf, Jonah.
Yet, the sight of a tiny, wobbly newborn trailing alongside her captured the hearts of all.
Introducing Jasper, Ellie, Jonah, and guardian Matilda
Unlike typical pregnancies, Ellie’s secret remained concealed throughout her 22-month gestation period. For nearly two years, she nurtured new life silently, surprising even the most seasoned observers.
Nurturing Jasper’s Beginnings
Ellie now embraces motherhood with two robust little calves by her side. Keeping with the family tradition, we’ve named her latest blessing Jasper.
Like his elder brother Jonah, Jasper exudes vitality, curiosity, and adorable plumpness — qualities cherished in every baby elephant. We estimated Jasper to be merely days old when Ellie proudly presented him to us.
Ellie’s Rescue and Sanctuary Beginnings
Ellie’s journey began in 2006 when the Amboseli Elephant Sanctuary team rescued her. Discovered near a perilous watering hole, a victim of the poaching epidemic plaguing the region, Ellie’s survival was miraculous.
Raised in the sanctuary, her spirited nature and sharp intelligence endeared her to all who cared for her.
A Beacon of Maternal Love
From her early days in the nursery, Ellie displayed a nurturing spirit, becoming a doting nanny to her fellow orphans and their offspring.
Her transition to motherhood with Jonah in 2020 was seamless, a testament to her instincts and affectionate demeanor.

As Jasper embarks on his wild journey alongside Ellie, Jonah, and their extended elephant family, the sanctuary eagerly anticipates the joys and surprises the future holds.
