In the heart of northern Tsavo East, the Ithumba family of elephants celebrates the passage of time and the growth of their clan.
What began with four orphaned elephants in 2004 has blossomed into a community of eleven new elephants spanning two generations.
Among them stands Mala, the newest addition to their family tree and the first offspring of Mwende, marking a significant milestone for the sanctuary.
Mwende’s journey into motherhood echoes the remarkable transformation of her mother, Mulika, who was rescued as a vulnerable orphan in 2000.
From her days of uncertainty at the Nursery to her current role as a nurturing mother in the wild, Mulika’s story epitomizes resilience and hope.
The leadership qualities exhibited by Mulika have been a guiding light for the Ithumba family. Chosen for her strength and compassion, Mulika has played a pivotal role in establishing the sanctuary and nurturing its inhabitants.
As a matriarch, she has integrated seamlessly with wild herds and become a cherished mentor to the orphans under her care.
Mala’s arrival at the stockade compound brought moments of both joy and concern. Struggling to thrive in the dry conditions of Ithumba, Mala’s mother, Mulika, made the courageous decision to seek assistance from the sanctuary’s caretakers.
With additional feedings and the support of her fellow ex-orphans, Mulika’s perseverance ensured Mala’s health and vitality.
The bond between Mwende and Mala signifies a continuation of the legacy Mulika and her companions established.
As Mwende proudly introduces her daughter to the Ithumba family, the sanctuary welcomes another symbol of hope and survival.
