Chyulu Hills National Park’s Remarkable Elephant Rescue in Mid-August

Amid August, a captivating rescue operation unfolded, with a team of dedicated individuals coming together to save an adult male elephant trapped in the thick mud along the Kilenyeti River, situated on the northern edge of Chyulu Hills National Park.

Over three intense days, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Big Life Foundation, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the local community joined forces to free the massive pachyderm.

The rescue was not without its challenges. The unforgiving terrain, caked in mud, presented a formidable obstacle, preventing vehicles from reaching the distressed elephant.

Even Land Rovers and a JCB stuck in the muck, further complicating the rescue efforts.

Weighing in at over five tons, the elephant’s plight posed a danger to itself and the rescuers.

In a dramatic turn of events, a DSWT helicopter was called upon to medivac a KWS ranger with a broken ankle, underscoring the dangerous nature of the mission.

Various specialized equipment, including a lifting crane and an excavator, was used to maneuver the trapped elephant carefully.

After days of relentless determination, utilizing chained lorries, and multiple attempts, the colossal creature was at last set free.

Exhausted and weakened from the ordeal, the elephant received essential medications and intravenous fluids to help him regain his strength.

On the evening of August 14th, three days after the rescue mission commenced, the resilient elephant, now reenergized, rose to his feet and walked away into the wilderness, marking a triumphant conclusion to the Herculean effort to secure his safety.
