Unlikely Friendship: How a Lion and His Caregiver Play Together

Last Update:

Engaging in a playful game with a fully grown lion is not for the faint-hearted, but Alex Larenty’s unique approach at The Lion Park near Johannesburg proves otherwise.

Despite the inherent dangers, Larenty’s fearless methods and exceptional animal-handling skills have set him apart in his interactions with Jamu, a nine-year-old lion weighing 550 pounds.

Originally from Chipping Norton, Larenty, now 50, moved from Oxfordshire to Africa, where he has developed a deep bond with the lions under his care.

Among them, Jamu particularly enjoys their playful interactions, with his favorite being a lighthearted tickling game.

Larenty’s bond with Jamu is a testament to their mutual trust. The lion, who weighs over 40 stone, relaxes completely as Larenty massages his enormous paws and engages in what many might consider a daring game of fetch.

While most would find the idea of such close interactions with a lion intimidating, Larenty’s confidence and connection with Jamu allow him to engage in these playful activities safely.

“I built a connection with Jamu by applying insect repellent to him, which is crucial for protecting our animals from parasites,” Larenty explained.

His relationship with Jamu has grown, so the lion enjoys being scratched and tickled. “His favorite game now is ‘This Little Piggy,’ and he loves it,” Larenty added.

In addition to his work with lions, Larenty’s skills even extend to offering massages to England’s football team.

He jokingly remarked, “Keeping Jamu fit and happy with my massages might just be the secret to success for our boys.”
