Reflecting on that day, Tarryn recalled, “We started our drive at 5:30 am, without any specific sightings in mind. As we drove, we heard over the radio that a pride of lions was resting in the center of the reserve. We decided to drive leisurely, curious to see what might happen.”
“Game drives are shaped by timing and a bit of luck. That day, we were fortunate—twice. After about an hour and a half, the lions began to stir and soon approached the road. Even though there was weekend traffic, we made sure to give the lions space, leading to an incredible moment as the entire pride crossed right in front of us.”
“The excitement was palpable, and my guests were thrilled. Sharing such experiences is what makes this job so rewarding.”
“Later, we went to Mankwe hide for a break, enjoying the peaceful view. After hearing that the lions were by the water, we felt content with our earlier sighting and decided to relax. Then, we noticed a herd of wildebeests heading toward the lions.”
Sensing something significant was about to happen, Tarryn suggested they follow the wildebeests, staying away from the traffic.
They watched both the prey and the predators. When a lioness crouched upon seeing the approaching herd, the tension grew.
As the wildebeests came closer, unaware of the lurking danger, one unfortunate wildebeest made the fatal mistake of moving toward the lioness, sealing its fate.
The lioness quickly took advantage of the situation, launching into a chase. Within minutes, she and the rest of the pride secured their kill.
Witnessing the raw power of nature stirred mixed emotions but highlighted the privilege of seeing these majestic animals in action.
During the hunt, a particularly poignant moment occurred. After mentioning to her guests that one of the wildebeests was pregnant, Tarryn and her group watched as the lioness tore out the unborn calf—a stark reminder of the harsh realities of nature.
After observing the lions’ feast, they left, allowing others to witness the captivating yet somber scene.
