Scarlett Johansson captivated audiences with her role as Cristina in the critically acclaimed drama “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
However, Sophie Monk, Australian singer, actress, and radio presenter, recently shared that Woody Allen initially approached her to play the role before casting Johansson in the 2008 film.
During her conversation with co-hosts Jules Lund and Merrick Watts on the 2-day FM breakfast show, Monk disclosed that she missed the opportunity due to a dead phone battery.
The 34-year-old stated that Allen had believed she had a “bit of Nicole Kidman” in her, but when she couldn’t return his call in time, he opted for Johansson.
“I could be a massive movie star right now,” Monk lamented, recounting how her phone died at the crucial moment.
She humorously noted that Woody Allen’s approach might have been influenced by watching her without sound in a movie, resulting in her being viewed as similar to Nicole Kidman.
By the time Monk managed to charge her phone and call Allen back, he had already decided. “I’ve already done it, but it was nice to meet you,” Allen reportedly said.
Monk expressed her disappointment, adding that she would have had the role if she had responded sooner.
In “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” Scarlett Johansson starred alongside Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in the story of two friends’ summer in Spain.
The film, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture, has since become a classic, with Johansson’s portrayal of Cristina contributing to her growing fame in Hollywood.
Monk, who has had other acting roles, including a part in the TV series “Entourage,” now reflects on what might have been had her phone not let her down at the crucial moment.
Despite missing out on the role, Monk continues to be successful in her multifaceted career, spanning music, acting, and radio presenting.
