Scarlett Johansson, who portrayed the iconic Black Widow, has previously indicated that her time as the assassin-turned-Avenger may be over, with her character’s last appearance in Black Widow in 2021.

But when asked recently, Johansson left room for speculation about her return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), saying “never say never.”

Appearing on the Today show to discuss her skincare line, The Outset, the 38-year-old actress responded to rumors about reprising her role.

When co-host Savannah Guthrie asked about the possibility, Johansson referred to her character’s fate in Avengers: Endgame, where Black Widow sacrificed herself to help retrieve the Soul Stone, sparing Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. “I believe that was it, am I correct? She passed,” Johansson said while noting that a return “would be miraculous…a marvel of Marvel.”

Further pressed by co-host Al Roker, Johansson humorously mentioned the multiverse, suggesting a possible loophole for her character to reappear.

She joked about alternate versions, wondering if there could be a vampire or zombie Black Widow, playfully sidestepping any direct answers about whether Marvel Studios had formally approached her to reprise the role.

Since her first appearance as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 (2010), Johansson portrayed the character in several films, including The Avengers (2012) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).

Although Black Widow died in Avengers: Endgame (2019), she returned to headline her own standalone movie in 2021, set between the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War.

In July 2021, Johansson shared with Fatherly that she had “no plans to return as” Black Widow, expressing satisfaction with her character’s journey. “It feels like a great way to go out for this chapter of my Marvel identity,” she said.
