Scarlett Johansson’s Super Bowl commercial for M&Ms, titled “Almost Champions,” takes a lighthearted jab at her past Oscar losses.
Joining NFL legends Dan Marino, Terrell Owens, and Bruce Smith, Johansson humorously addresses her experience of coming close to victory without winning.
In the ad, Marino, Owens, and Smith, all renowned players who never clinched a Super Bowl win, brainstormed ways to get their hands on a “runner-up prize.”
Marino humorously suggests, “Only Super Bowl winners get a ring, right?” To which the yellow M&M quips, “It doesn’t taste like peanut butter,” while the brown M&M adds, “Don’t lick the bling.” Marino explains, “M&Ms presents the ‘Almost Champions: Ring of Comfort.’ It’s actual science.”
The rings are supposedly made from compressed M&Ms peanut butter and polished with the essence of those who nearly won a Super Bowl.
Johansson’s cameo is notable as the red M&M presents her with a ring, saying, “I’ve lost two Oscar races!” the red M&M cheekily replies, “In the same year!” Johansson, who was nominated for Oscars for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in 2020, responds with a mock scowl before accepting the ring, warning, “Don’t tell Marino I gave you this.”
Johansson shared her thoughts on the ad: “It’s playful and comforting at the same time, just like one of my all-time favorite Mars candies, Peanut Butter M&Ms. I hope fans enjoy watching the ad as much as I enjoyed making it.”
Tune in to catch the full 30-second ad during the first quarter of tonight’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers at 6:30 p.m. EST on CBS.
