Scarlett Johansson Sparks Speculation About MCU Comeback

Last Update:

Scarlett Johansson, the acclaimed actress known for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently sparked discussions about a potential return to the franchise.

Although she has previously stated she has “no plans to return” as the assassin-turned-Avenger, Johansson’s recent comments leave room for speculation.

Appearing on the “Today” show to promote her skincare line, The Outset, the 38-year-old actress subtly addressed the rumors of reprising her superhero role.

“I believe that was it, am I correct? She passed,” Johansson said, referencing the emotional scene in “Avengers: Endgame” where her character, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, sacrifices herself to obtain the Soul Stone, saving Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye in the process.

Johansson hinted at the slim possibility of a comeback, saying, “That would be miraculous. It would genuinely be a marvel of Marvel. It would be incredible. Who knows, though?”

Her light-hearted tone during the conversation with host Savannah Guthrie suggests that while unlikely, the door isn’t entirely closed.

When co-host Al Roker pressed Johansson about the ongoing rumors and the Marvel “multiverse” concept, she responded playfully, “Is this the character in the form of a vampire? Since I’m available for that. Or perhaps a zombie version?”

This evasive yet humorous response indicates that while she hasn’t received an official offer, the idea of a multiverse could provide an unconventional way for her to return.

Johansson debuted as Black Widow in “Iron Man 2” (2010) and continued to portray the character in numerous MCU films, including “The Avengers” (2012) and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014).

Despite her character’s death in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” she reprised her role in the standalone “Black Widow” movie released in 2021, which is set between the events of “Captain America: Civil War” (2016) and “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018).

In a 2021 interview with Fatherly, Johansson reiterated that she had no plans to return, expressing satisfaction with her final performance. “I feel really satisfied with this film,” she said. “It feels like a great way to go out for this chapter of my Marvel identity.”

Nevertheless, Johansson hinted at a continued relationship with Marvel, stating, “I would love to be able to continue to collaborate with Marvel in other ways because I think there’s just an incredible wealth of stories there. Re-imagining this genre is something that I find very interesting.”
