Scarlett Johansson, who ended her three-year marriage with French journalist Romain Dauriac in 2017, recently shared that her latest role, playing a character navigating a divorce, resonated deeply with her experiences.
The 34-year-old actress, one of six honorees featured in Elle magazine’s Women in Hollywood issue, discussed her connection with her character Nicole in the upcoming film Marriage Story, written and directed by Noah Baumbach. The film is set for release this December.

Johansson appeared radiant in a strapless yellow dress on Elle’s cover, a striking contrast to the emotionally challenging aspects of her role. She recalled how, over a lunch meeting in 2017, Baumbach handed her a monologue that immediately felt relatable.
“It was the first piece Noah gave me,” Johansson said, “and it felt familiar somehow, not because of what I’d been experiencing then, but perhaps from how I grew up or watching other women who supported their partners’ dreams and ended up feeling lost.”

Playing Nicole, a mother in the midst of a separation, gave Johansson a chance to explore these themes, which she found both familiar and intriguing.
She explained, “I didn’t hesitate because I knew I’d have the opportunity to say those words. Noah gave me that monologue, and I thought, ‘Am I going to pass this up?’”
Johansson and Dauriac finalized their divorce in September 2017, after marrying in 2014. Despite their split, they continue to co-parent their daughter Rose, now five.

Johansson was previously married to actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011, who has since married actress Blake Lively.
Currently, Johansson is engaged to Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost. Elle’s Women in Hollywood issue, celebrating notable women in the film industry, will be available on newsstands on October 22.
