Scarlett Johansson has built an impressive career from starting as a child star to becoming one of Hollywood’s top actors.
Known for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Johansson has shown she’s more than just a pretty face.
In 2012, Johansson starred alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins in Hitchcock, a film about Alfred Hitchcock’s journey while making his classic movie Psycho. Johansson played Janet Leigh, and Hopkins took on the role of Hitchcock.
The film includes a recreation of the infamous shower scene from Psycho, which left Johansson extremely nervous.
A Terrifying Scene for Johansson
Some movie scenes are unforgettable, and the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is one of them.
In this scene, Janet Leigh’s character is brutally attacked while showering, with shadows enhancing the knife’s menace, making it a nightmare for viewers.
Recreating this scene in Hitchcock, Johansson had to face Hopkins wielding a 12-inch kitchen knife. Speaking to V Magazine, Johansson admitted her fear, recalling Hopkins’ past roles as menacing characters.
“As much as Anthony Hopkins is a pussycat, he’s terrifying. Maybe I watched Silence of the Lambs too many times as a kid. Maybe I was having some flashbacks,” she said.
The pressure to shoot the scene quickly added to her anxiety. They had only one day to film it, and Johansson had to endure getting wet repeatedly. While the physical aspect didn’t trouble her, the psychological intensity of the scene haunted her.
Johansson’s Role in Asteroid City
Known for her classic Hollywood look, Johansson also portrayed a character inspired by 1950s star Bette Davis in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City.
Set in 1955, the movie revolves around events at a Junior Stargazers Convention. Johansson connected deeply with the script and had lengthy discussions with Anderson about her character, Midge Campbell.
Talking to Variety, Johansson shared her intrigue about her character’s backstory, “I was curious: Who is this person? How did she get here to be so successful at that time? She’s this star of stage and screen — what drove her there?”
Despite Anderson’s structured directing style, Johansson found room to explore and improvise within her role. Asteroid City premiered at Cannes in May 2023 and hit. Theaters on June 16h, 2023.
