Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson is set to make her television debut, taking on both acting and executive producing duties in a gender-swapped adaptation of the novel “Just Cause” for Amazon Prime Video.
The 38-year-old actress, known for her roles in blockbuster movies, will spearhead the new series, which has been greenlit for production by Amazon in a straight-to-series order, as reported by Deadline.
This project holds personal significance for Johansson, who has a history with “Just Cause.” At age 10, she appeared in the 1995 film adaptation, playing the daughter of Sean Connery’s character.
The original novel by John Katzenbach tells the story of a Miami journalist, Matt Cowart, who investigates a death row inmate’s claim of innocence.
However, the movie adaptation shifted the focus to a Harvard law professor, played by Connery, who takes on a racially charged case.
In this television adaptation, Johansson will portray Madison ‘Madi’ Cowart, a struggling reporter sent to cover the final days of a death row inmate. The series promises to delve into themes of justice, morality, and the power of the media.
The project, which received considerable interest from various parties, will be penned by Christy Hall, known for her work on “I Am Not Okay With This.”
Johansson will star in the series and serve as an executive producer through her production company, These Pictures, alongside writer Christy Hall and producers Jonathan Lia and Keenan Flynn.
While this marks Johansson’s first significant leading role in a television series, she has briefly appeared on various shows throughout her career, including “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “Saturday Night Live.”
Johansson’s recent projects include portraying Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and lending her voice to characters in animated series like “Robot Chicken.”
Johansson is filming “Project Artemis” alongside Channing Tatum, Ray Romano, and Jim Rash, further expanding her diverse portfolio.
