In a touching tale from Othello, Washington, a young puppy named Zoomie found herself abandoned and alone in the woods. For a whole week, this four-month-old dog survived by drinking from a nearby stream and taking shelter under olive trees, all the while hoping for a kind soul to rescue her.
Her situation caught the eye of a compassionate driver who regularly saw Zoomie resting under the trees. Concerned for her safety, he began leaving her burritos as food during his daily commutes. Wanting to provide more substantial help, he reached out to Adams County Pet Rescue for assistance.
Kayya Grant, the director at Adams County Pet Rescue, responded to the call for help. She and a colleague headed to the woods with a crate, set on bringing Zoomie to safety. Upon arrival, they found the pup barking anxiously, overwhelmed by their presence. Understanding Zoomie’s fear, Grant took a patient approach, knowing it was crucial to earn her trust before attempting to transport her.
Speaking softly to ease Zoomie’s anxiety, Grant reassured the cautious puppy. Although hesitant at first, Zoomie was gradually enticed by some kibble placed nearby. As she cautiously approached the food, Grant gently patted her head. Over time, Zoomie reciprocated the gesture of trust by resting her head in Grant’s hands.
Satisfied with the progress made, Grant left Zoomie for the night, only to return to a much warmer reception the following morning. Overjoyed to see Grant, Zoomie excitedly bounced around, solidifying her new name. Grant safely placed Zoomie into the crate, marking the beginning of her journey to a more secure and loving environment.
Once at the rescue center, Zoomie received the medical attention she needed and was introduced to a calm canine companion who helped her adjust to her new surroundings. It was not long before a family looking to adopt fell in love with Zoomie’s charming personality. They completed the necessary paperwork, and soon Zoomie was off to her forever home.
