In a rare and intense confrontation, a pride of lions in South Africa’s Entabeni Game Reserve took on an unusual foe—a large crocodile.
The remarkable encounter was witnessed and captured by 15-year-old Connor Dawes and his family, who were surprised as they watched the event unfold.

The situation began when a male lion prowling along a dirt road near a dam joined a group of younger lions. They came across a crocodile resting on the shore as they moved closer to the water’s edge.
Without warning, the male lion attacked, latching onto the crocodile’s back leg and attempting to drag it away from the water’s edge.
Astounded by the sight, Connor watched as the rest of the pride joined the attack, surrounding the crocodile and launching repeated assaults.
Although crocodiles are powerful predators known for their strong bite force and ability to inflict serious injury, the lions’ numbers gave them the upper hand in this struggle.
“I was shocked that a lion would even think of taking on a crocodile,” Connor shared. “I wasn’t too worried for the crocodile—until the lion grabbed its back leg and started pulling it away from the water. Then the rest of the pride joined in, continuing to provoke and attack the crocodile.”
Despite the overwhelming force of the lions, the crocodile eventually managed to escape, retreating into the safety of the water.
Apparently content with their display of dominance, the lions casually walked away and settled down as if nothing unusual had occurred.
Connor and his family were left in awe by the encounter, with their game ranger noting that he had never seen or heard of such a confrontation before.
Later sightings confirmed that the crocodile had survived, a testament to the resilience of these ancient predators.
