An injured lion met a tragic end after being trampled to death by a herd of African buffalo in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
The male lion had recently been driven out of his pride by a coalition of other male lions. Unfortunately, while trying to recover from his injuries, he was spotted by a large group of African buffalo, known for their aggressive nature and longstanding enmity with lions.
Game ranger Lyle Greg captured this entire incident. Initially, the lion attempted to conceal himself in the tall grass when he noticed the approaching buffalo herd.
However, a shift in the wind allowed the buffalo to catch his scent, prompting them to launch a coordinated attack.
Due to the injuries he had sustained in a previous fight, particularly his hind leg, the lion could not escape the charging buffalo.
The herd quickly caught up to him, knocking him to the ground. Despite his efforts, the lion was powerless against the relentless assault.
The buffalo took turns attacking the lion with their powerful horns, ensuring he could not escape. The brutal stampede continued for a prolonged period, with each buffalo delivering crushing blows.
Game ranger Lyle Greg described how the lion, already weakened by his injuries, was ultimately overwhelmed when a large bull jumped on his head, sealing his fate.
The lion did not survive the attack, as confirmed by Kruger National Park management. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities of life in the wild, where the struggle for survival is often unforgiving.
