The dramatic encounter occurred one early morning at Buffelshoek in Sabi Sands, Greater Kruger Park. Vernon Cresswell, a seasoned wildlife enthusiast, captured the event on video.
The Talamati Pride, renowned for their hunting skills, had taken down a male waterbuck just hours before. After feeding, they left the carcass about 100 meters from a dam.
Sensing an opportunity, a crocodile emerged from the water, lured by the scent of the kill. It approached the carcass, unaware of the nearby pride.
As the crocodile moved in, nine curious cubs approached it cautiously. Their mothers, five adult lionesses, quickly became aware of the situation and hurried to intervene.
Initially, the lionesses seemed to test the crocodile’s reflexes and speed, circling it playfully. However, the crocodile responded with a powerful snap of its jaws, a warning to the lions.
This aggressive display prompted the lionesses to launch a full-scale attack. Despite the crocodile’s impressive speed and strength, the lions soon gained the advantage with their greater numbers and agility.
Realizing its predicament, the crocodile retreated to the safety of the water, disappearing into the dam as startled hippos observed from a distance.
Observing wildlife for over 30 years, Cresswell described the encounter as a rare and memorable event.
He highlighted the significance of patience and anticipation in wildlife photography, noting that nature often rewards those willing to wait.
This extraordinary video highlights the unpredictable and thrilling nature of the African bush, where even the most formidable predators can encounter unexpected challenges.
