Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh Share Bonding Moments on Black Widow Set

Last Update:

During a recent interview with Marie Claire, Scarlett Johansson, 35, and Florence Pugh, 24, they opened up about the instant connection they shared while filming the upcoming Marvel superhero movie, Black Widow.

The two actresses, known for their roles in Avengers and Little Women, respectively, quickly developed a strong rapport on set, with Pugh mentioning, “I think maybe the tiredness did add to my not being so self-aware. I allowed myself to start taking the p*** out of Scarlett from day one, which was great. From that point onward, we did it to each other. It was instant sisterly bonding.”

In Black Widow, set to hit theaters on May 7, Natasha Romanoff (played by Johansson) is depicted as confronting her missions alone before forming a deep friendship with Yelena Belova, portrayed by Pugh, who is also trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow.

Florence Pugh, the rising star of the miniseries The Little Drummer Girl, expressed her desire to continue exploring diverse roles, saying, “It’s always been, kind of, a number-one top priority for me to find women who are fascinating and powerful in their way. I want to play complex and confusing characters.”

Scarlett Johansson, also known for her role in Jojo Rabbit, discussed the significance of being directed by Cate Shortland in a predominantly male-dominated industry, emphasizing, “It’s a challenge in a male-dominated industry to tell a woman’s story from the perspective of a female director and focus on the heart of something that is inherently female.”

Both actresses emphasized the importance of empathy in their portrayal of characters. Scarlett added, “If I can empathize with a character, no matter their moral compass, that’s important to me.”
