In a rare and intense moment, a lioness attempts to take down a young elephant by herself, driven by the need to feed her hungry cubs, who await her return deep in the nearby forest. The question remains: will this bold move pay off?
28-year-old filmmaker Samuel Chevallier, a member of the African Bush Camps film team, Rewild, captured this extraordinary scene. The video reveals a heart-pounding moment where survival instincts collide.

For those seeking remarkable wildlife encounters like this, Somalisa Camp in Hwange, Zimbabwe, is a top destination renowned for offering unforgettable safari experiences.
Samuel recounted the event in detail. “We had just left Somalisa Camp after an early morning coffee, heading toward where we had last seen a pride of lions the previous evening,” he said. “The sun was rising, and we found the pride still resting. The cubs were playing, and the mother got up, gathered them, and led them into the bush. We followed, curious to see what would happen. Suddenly, we heard the screech of an elephant.”
The group stumbled upon a dramatic sight: the lioness had attacked a young elephant, gripping it fiercely with her claws.

The elephant fought back, attempting to break free from her grasp. After a brief struggle, the elephant shook off the lioness and retreated into the bush.
The lioness’s cubs remained hidden in the tall grass, watching their mother’s effort. Despite the failed hunt, the lioness regrouped with her cubs and led them away unharmed.
“It was an intense experience,” Samuel reflected. “The adrenaline was high, and everyone was on edge. Hearing the sound of an animal fighting for its life is always hard. There was a mix of emotions—relief when the young elephant escaped and sympathy for the hungry cubs who needed food. It was a feeling I hadn’t experienced before.”

While the hunt didn’t succeed, the lioness’s determination to provide for her cubs was clear, a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of survival in the wild.
