Owning a pet is a lifelong commitment, but unfortunately, not everyone treats it that way. Despite the availability of shelters and assistance, some individuals still resort to cruel acts of abandonment.
Such was the case in Ridgeway, Virginia, where rescuers from the Henry County Animal Shelter were shocked to find not one, but two litters of puppies, left to fend for themselves in the woods.
Abandoned and Starving
It began when animal control officers received a call about a litter of puppies running dangerously close to the road. While responding to this call, another came in—this time about a different litter of puppies found just a mile away.
“These two different litters were deep in the woods scavenging for food. Only one mile apart from each other. Coincidence? We think not,” Henry County Animal Shelter shared on Facebook.
Terrified and malnourished, the puppies were found in appalling conditions—covered in ticks, suffering from worms, and clearly starving. The officers spent the entire day rescuing the 11 puppies, ensuring they were safe from further harm.
A Race Against Time
Following the rescue, two puppies were quickly adopted, while the remaining nine were transferred to Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, which had prepared several foster homes for them.
Six puppies went to one foster home, two to another, and one to a third. While the puppies seemed to be adjusting well, things took a turn for the worse when five of the puppies tested positive for parvo, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease for dogs.
“If you end up getting a dog that gets parvo, it’s going to be vomiting, having diarrhea… It’s a lot of day-to-day care, including emergency 24/7 care and feeding via tubes because they’re not going to be eating,” said Monja Vadnais, a volunteer and foster with Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, in an interview with WDBJ7.
A Difficult Battle
The following days were tense, filled with prayers and hope for the puppies’ survival. After weeks of intensive care, countless sleepless nights, and thousands of dollars in medical expenses, the puppies finally began to recover.
“All of the puppies are thankfully now out of the hospital and slowly getting better,” the rescue announced. The focus now is on helping the puppies regain their strength, gain weight, and heal emotionally from their traumatic experience.
A Brighter Future
Once fully recovered, the puppies will be available for adoption through Virginia German Shepherd Rescue. Their journey from abandonment to recovery has been filled with challenges, but thanks to the dedication of the rescuers, they now have a bright future ahead.
Despite efforts by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the perpetrator of this cruel act has not been found. Sheriff Wayne Davis urged pet owners to act responsibly, saying, “If you’re going to own pets, you need to be responsible. They need to be cared for adequately. They should be treated more like a family member than just an animal to be dropped in the woods. Please don’t abandon your pets.”
A Call for Compassion
This story serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of animal cruelty and the importance of compassion toward animals. Thanks to the quick actions of rescuers and volunteers, 11 innocent puppies were given a second chance at life.
