Helen, a blind bison living at Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary in Oregon, struggled to connect with other animals when she arrived about five years ago.
Despite the sanctuary’s efforts to find her a “pasture pal,” Helen remained solitary until an unexpected friend came along – Oliver, a curious Jersey calf.
According to Gwen from Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary, Oliver, born to a rescued dairy cow named Betsy, quickly formed an unbreakable bond with Helen, forever changing her life.
Oliver’s gentle nature allowed Helen to feel the love and understanding she needed, transforming their friendship into a heartwarming tale.
Helen’s maternal instincts kicked in as she started grooming Oliver, whose fur even began to resemble her dark brown coat.
As their bond grew, Helen’s demeanor changed, and she became visibly happier.
After spending a year together, Oliver eventually joined the sanctuary’s cow herd. But Helen’s newfound confidence enabled her to welcome other animal friends, such as Uma, a rescued piglet.
The two now often share meals and snuggle together in the hay. Helen also became a foster mother to Italo, another rescued calf.
The pair spend most of their day’s side by side, with Helen grooming Italo just as she did Oliver.
Gwen from Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary remarked that witnessing Helen’s transformation has been extraordinary.
The sanctuary, home to nearly 300 animals who have experienced the worst of humanity, aims to share their stories and promote positive change in society’s perception of these creatures.
