At a shelter in Georgia, dedicated caregivers welcome all kinds of new residents, whether they come with physical challenges or unique personalities.
Recently, the shelter welcomed eight stray cats, but one in particular quickly caught everyone’s attention.
Igor, a charming orange tabby, stood out with his distinctive, cartoon-like scowl. Despite his grumpy expression, Amanda Matthews, a field officer at HCAS and Igor’s main carer, was captivated by his unique look.
“I’ve never seen another cat like that,” Matthews shared with The Dodo. “He has a very distinctive grumpy face.”

While the veterinary team was initially unsure about Igor’s medical condition, they soon discovered his vision, though near-sighted, wasn’t severely affected by his endearing deformity.
“He can still see,” Matthews explained, noting how easily the curious cat could get lost within the shelter’s many corners. His explorations often led to him requiring assistance, like the time he got stuck behind a door and cried out for help.
“He couldn’t figure out how to get out,” Matthews recalled. But Igor’s adventures never caused him distress for long, as his new friends always stayed nearby to offer a helping hand.
Each time someone aided Igor, he showed gratitude in the sweetest way possible—by cuddling. Matthews noted, “All he wants is to cuddle. He’s such a sweet cat despite having that grumpy little face.”

Initially shy, Igor soon became comfortable with Matthews and his new human companions. Then, two weeks after settling in, something wonderful happened.
A prospective adopter visited the shelter, looking for the perfect feline friend. She first encountered a 3-month-old kitten named Spooks and fell in love, but Igor also captured her heart.
Matthews reported, “She ended up adopting both him and the playful little kitten, welcoming both into her home.”
Igor now enjoys life with his new family and a furry sister by his side. During his brief stay at the shelter, Matthews and her colleagues grew quite fond of Igor.
While they would have cherished having him as an office cat, they are thrilled that he found a loving household. “Every one of our rescues deserves a home,” Matthews confirmed, “but Igor especially needed it. He’s just the sweetest thing ever.”
