It’s heart-wrenching to think about the many cats living their entire lives on the streets. If it were possible, I’d help every stray find a home. Fortunately, there are compassionate souls who are doing just that.

Meet Jen, a devoted cat rescuer based in Los Angeles. Driven by her passion, Jen has embarked on a mission to improve the lives of countless cats through her nonprofit, Del Gato Rescue.

Among her many rescue stories is one that stands out—a senior cat named George. George’s journey to finding a loving home is truly remarkable.

Not long ago, one of Jen’s foster volunteers alerted her to an elderly cat in desperate need of help. This cat, George, had spent over a decade wandering the streets of Los Angeles, surviving on the kindness of the locals.

His only companion and source of comfort was his brother, who tragically passed away after being hit by a car. Heartbroken and alone, George was left more vulnerable than ever.

Upon learning about George’s plight, Jen couldn’t let this gentle senior cat continue to suffer. Determined to give him the second chance he deserved, Jen set out to rescue George, bringing him the love and care he had missed for so long.

When Jen and her team arrived to rescue him, they were pleasantly surprised by George’s friendly nature. Unlike many street cats, George showed no fear, allowing them to gently pick him up. Jen remarked, “We didn’t need to trap him at all.

That’s how friendly he was!” In George’s eyes, Jen saw gratitude and a glimpse of hope for his future.

Jen quickly noticed George’s social nature, leading her to believe that he had once been an indoor cat. He seemed genuinely thrilled to be in the presence of people who truly cared for him.

However, despite his friendly demeanor, George’s health was in a dire state. He suffered from a severe allergic skin reaction due to untreated flea infestations, resulting in partial ear loss and a chronic respiratory condition.

These ailments had caused him to stop eating at one point.

Undeterred by these challenges, Jen took on the task of restoring George’s health. She explained, “We gave him antibiotic injections, steroid treatments, oral antibiotics, and pain medication.

His rotten teeth were falling out, so we had them removed, and laser therapy was used to reduce inflammation and pain.” Most importantly, George received an abundance of love and care, which proved to be the most powerful medicine.

As time went on, George’s health steadily improved. He showed no desire to return to the outside world, content to remain indoors, enjoying good food, gentle company, and soothing music like a perfect house cat.

Thanks to Jen’s efforts, George eventually no longer required emergency care. He found a loving foster home with Jadyn, who continued to shower him with affection. Today, George is happier than ever.

Reflecting on his journey, Jen expressed what she would say to George if he could understand: “I would tell George that we’re sorry we couldn’t rescue him sooner, but he is now safe and loved for the rest of his life.”
