Animals have an extraordinary ability to bring joy and comfort into our lives, often becoming beloved family members. Unfortunately, many animals still suffer from neglect and cruelty, with numerous dogs living alone on the streets instead of in caring homes.
Despite this harsh reality, stories of kindness and compassion can emerge, reminding us of the goodness that still exists in the world. One such story unfolded on a scorching summer day when Rosa María Segura Alcántar and her husband Erick spotted something unusual on a highway.

As they slowed their car, they saw a small, scared dog dangerously close to the traffic. Without hesitation, they stopped the car to help. “She looked confused, dehydrated, and malnourished. We stopped, and she started coming towards us,” Rosa recalled in an interview with The Dodo.
Braving the busy road, Erick waited for the traffic to clear, carefully approached the trembling dog, and gently carried her to safety. Upon closer inspection, they noticed an old wound around her neck, suggesting she had been tied up for a long time before being abandoned.

Uncertain of her past suffering, what truly mattered was that the little dog was now safe. In their care, she had found temporary peace and a hint of trust. As they drove away, the dog, who would later be named Manzana, began to relax and even fell asleep in their arms, perhaps for the first time sensing she was finally safe.
What Manzana didn’t know was that she had fallen into the hands of two people committed to saving animals’ lives. Rosa and Erick operate Refugio Xollin, a shelter that provides rescue, care, and new homes for dogs in need.
“We feel relieved to have Manzana with us. She would have died out there, either hit by a car or from a lack of food and water,” Rosa expressed.

Now under Rosa and Erick’s devoted care, Manzana is slowly recovering. “She’s already gained weight since her rescue. She’s not aggressive at all; she’s very calm, loving, caring, and gets along with other dogs. Her little eyes are shining,” Rosa shared with warmth.
Thanks to Rosa and Erick, Manzana’s painful past is behind her. Soon, she will find a permanent, loving home where she will be cherished and safe, exactly as she deserves.
