When Rachael Sylvester, the founder and director of Sidewalk Specials, a dog rescue in South Africa, heard about a dog that had been sleeping outside for three years, she felt compelled to intervene. Along with her team, she visited the dog’s home and was deeply saddened by what they discovered.

The dog, named Spencer, had spent the past three years curled up in the same outdoor corner by his family’s home. That small corner had been his entire world, and the sadness was evident in his eyes.

In a video for The Dodo, Sylvester explained, “Spencer just wanted to be near his family, close to his home. He seemed like he had given up, trying to make himself as inconspicuous as possible.”

Sylvester was baffled by the family’s treatment of Spencer, and it was clear the dog was equally confused. He was suffering from mange and had injuries from constant scratching. His condition was dire, and his rescuers feared for his future.

Upon visiting the family, Sylvester asked, “Do you love this dog? Do you actually want him?” Faced with the situation, the family decided to relinquish Spencer to the rescue team, marking the beginning of a significant change in his life.

“Everyone agreed this dog deserved a better life, and then all we had to do was make sure he got it,” Sylvester noted.

Spencer embarked on his journey of recovery with newfound support, receiving the care and affection he desperately needed. Eventually, he was adopted by a loving family, and a year after his rescue, he was a completely transformed dog.

“Spencer has found the perfect home,” Sylvester shared. “His new mom absolutely adores him. He has no sense of his size; he believes he’s a lap dog, immediately snuggling up whenever she sits.”

Spencer’s transformation is remarkable. Gone are the days of sleeping outside in a desolate corner. Thanks to his dedicated rescuers, Spencer is now thriving and couldn’t be happier.
