For dog lovers, few things are as heartbreaking as seeing a loyal companion abandoned to fend for itself. Dulce, a black-and-white dog, experienced this cruelty firsthand when her family left her on the street with only a bag of her beloved toys for comfort.
Alone and Betrayed
A man discovered Dulce lying in front of his workplace, her bag of toys beside her—a small semblance of security in the face of betrayal. Unable to help at the time, he called his friend, Evelyn Flores, known for her love of animals.
By the time Evelyn arrived the next morning, Dulce’s heartbreak had deepened. Someone had stolen her bag of toys, leaving her with nothing. “Someone had stolen the bag of toys,” Evelyn told The Dodo. “They left the bag empty.”
Stripped of her family and her only remaining comfort, Dulce was utterly alone.
A New Start
Despite already caring for eight dogs at home, Evelyn couldn’t leave Dulce behind. She took her in as a foster, naming her Dulce—Spanish for “sweet”—to reflect the dog’s affectionate and loving nature.
Evelyn’s home became a sanctuary for Dulce, who quickly adapted to her new surroundings. Her sweet demeanor and gratitude melted Evelyn’s heart, and the thought of parting with her became unbearable.
Forever Loved
Evelyn made the life-changing decision to adopt Dulce permanently. Surrounded by love and care, Dulce thrived. Her once-thin frame filled out, and she transformed into a happy, healthy dog who adored her family.
“We try to give her a lot of love because we know that she was mistreated,” Evelyn shared. “She came to us skinny, and now she is chubby.”
A Promise Fulfilled
Two years after rescuing Dulce, Evelyn has kept her promise: Dulce is never alone. Her journey from abandonment to a life filled with love and security is a testament to the power of compassion.
Dulce’s story reminds us of the impact one kind person can have on a life and the joy that comes from giving an animal a second chance. For Dulce, her heartbreaking past is now just a distant memory, replaced by a forever home filled with love.
