Freya was found abandoned in the woods of Kentucky, USA, cruelly stuffed into a duffel bag. Her previous owner had left her defenseless, exposed to the dangers of the wild. To make matters worse, this innocent pup was born without her front feet and suffered a fractured femur.

Thankfully, kind-hearted rescuers discovered her just in time and brought her to the Arrow Fund Rescue in Prospect, Kentucky. Despite her painful condition, Freya amazed everyone with her joyful personality.

A Second Chance at Life

Due to her size and fragile state, surgery wasn’t an option right away. Instead, Freya underwent physical therapy to improve her condition. Even while receiving care in the ICU, she kept her bright smile—a beacon of hope for those around her.

It was during her time in the ICU that Freya met Emily Weedman, a staff member grieving the loss of her previous dog, Maki. At first, Emily hesitated to take on a puppy with such special needs. But one moment changed everything.

“I looked at the screaming baby and wasn’t sure if taking a special-needs dog home was the best option for our family. Then my coworker leaned in and said, ‘Just hold her for a second.’ I opened her cage, picked her up, and the rest is history.”

A Perfect Fit for the Weedman Family

Emily and her family quickly adapted their home to meet Freya’s needs. To protect her paw nubs, they got her custom socks to prevent sores. They also covered their floors with soft surfaces so Freya could move freely without injuring herself.

In her new home, Freya thrived. She played joyfully with Emily’s kids, explored the house and yard, and curled up in her fluffy bed with her favorite stuffed toys. The Weedmans gave her the love, care, and comfort she deserved, and Freya gave them endless joy in return.

Emily recalls, “I can remember the sigh she let out when I held her that first time, like she knew she was meant to be my girl. Like she was meant to snuggle our boys. Like she knew she was a Weedman.”

A New Name and a New Life

As Freya grew into a strong, happy pup, the family renamed her Hanabi Nubbin, a name that reflects her bright and playful spirit. Once a five-pound puppy, Hanabi is now a lively, 40-pound Pitbull with a big personality.

The Weedmans even created an official Instagram page to share Hanabi’s adventures, inspiring others with her incredible journey.
