In the quiet of night, a small puppy named Jiminy Cricket was left alone in an empty parking lot, tucked away in a cardboard box. The person who abandoned him hoped to escape unnoticed, but security cameras captured the act, enabling rescuers to reach Jiminy before it was too late.

Jiminy’s start was rough. When he arrived at the Bainbridge Decatur County Humane Society, his condition was critical, leaving staff uncertain if he would pull through. Despite being overwhelmed with stray animals, the shelter received a helping hand from a volunteer at the Leon County Humane Society (LCHS) in Tallahassee, Florida. Jiminy was swiftly taken to a veterinary clinic there for urgent care where the determined staff helped him regain his strength.

Among those touched by Jiminy’s story was Shannon Colavecchio, a foster mom who decided to take him under her wing. Reflecting on her first encounter with him, Shannon told The Dodo: “I went to the vet and picked him up. The first couple of days he was very scared. His tail was tucked, but he was eating. That was a good sign.” Despite his fragile state, Jiminy warmed hearts with his sweet nature.

As Jiminy settled in during his first week with Shannon, he primarily rested, gradually becoming more comfortable. Soon, he began to welcome cuddles and explore his new environment. Updates from the Leon County Humane Society on Facebook showed Jiminy’s delightful progress: “Jiminy is in foster care, and he is beyond spoiled. His foster mom showers him with affection and toys. He wears a sweater since he doesn’t have any body fat to warm him, and he has plenty of outfits to choose from. Some he will have to grow into.”

By the third week, Jiminy had transformed—eating better, playing like a typical puppy, and exhibiting a lively personality. Within a month, he was nearly fully healthy. His fur blossomed, he gained weight, and he thrived.

As Jiminy reached full recovery and was ready for adoption, Shannon faced a decision. Having fostered and re-homed dogs before, she was familiar with the process. Yet, Jiminy held a special place in her heart. Shannon confessed a desire to ensure he stayed close, wishing he could be adopted by someone she knew so she could remain “Aunt Shannon.”

Ultimately, Shannon and her family realized they couldn’t let Jiminy go. He was part of their family, much like the three other dogs they had rescued before. Overflowing with joy, Shannon declared, “We’ve had him since February 19, 2020, when he was barely 4 pounds and sick, covered in mange, and this dog has been with us and has become such a part of our family. So we have decided that Jiminy Cricket is staying with us and is going to be our fourth rescue dog and maybe our most special one. He is an amazing dog. We love him so much, and I’m officially the crazy dog lady.”

Today, Jiminy Cricket enjoys a happy life with Shannon and her family, leaving his troubled past behind.
