Though known for its shy nature, the Garnet Pitta still captures attention with its brilliant display of shimmering blue and red plumage. This striking combination makes it hard to miss despite its elusive behavior.
The Garnet Pitta (Erythropitta granatina) is part of the Pittidae family. This medium-sized bird, typically 15 to 25 centimeters long, has a short tail and a vibrant mix of purplish-blue and deep red feathers.
Its standout features include bright blue wing covers and a bold red crown. In contrast, female Garnet Pittas are mostly brown, with a red patch on their heads and a few blue feathers near their wings.
This species is native to several Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Burma, and Singapore. It thrives in tropical and subtropical lowland forests, where it is well adapted to its environment.
The Garnet Pitta’s breeding season runs from March to August. During this period, the birds lay up to six eggs in a large, spherical nest, usually built in a tree or shrub, though it is sometimes placed on the ground. Both parents share the responsibility of caring for their young.
