Amidst his workday in Appomattox, Virginia, the construction worker experienced something unexpected.

Exhausted from his labor, he was startled by faint cries from a nearby dumpster. Upon investigation, he discovered the cries came from puppies in dire need of help.

Inside the dumpster, the worker found four helpless newborn puppies tucked inside a dog food bag. “They were cold to the touch,” an Appomattox Animal Shelter representative shared with The Dodo.

Without wasting a moment, the worker called animal control. The officers wasted no time in arriving at the scene, rescuing the puppies, and transferring them to the Appomattox Animal Shelter.

The shelter staff quickly fed the puppies and provided them a warm resting place. Given that the puppies’ eyes and ears remained closed and their umbilical cords were still attached, the staff determined they were no more than 24 hours old. Remarkably, despite their difficult start, the puppies were in relatively good condition.

“They were incredibly young and separated from their mother too soon, but they were doing well,” the shelter informed. “They took to bottle feeding immediately and warmed up quickly.”

The staff named the puppies Walter White, Gus Fring, Saul Goodman, and Jane Margolis, inspired by the well-known TV show “Breaking Bad.”

Following their initial care, the puppies were moved to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, a nonprofit animal welfare organization in Charlottesville, Virginia.

These puppies will be nurtured by a caring foster family until they find their forever homes, filled with love and care.
