[Video] Chester Zoo Welcomes Healthy Tiger Cub Trio

In an encouraging milestone for wildlife conservation, Chester Zoo’s three rare Sumatran tiger cubs recently underwent their first-ever health check. Born on October 21 to mother Kirana and father Fabi, the cubs represent a significant achievement for the zoo and the future of their critically endangered species.

Last week, the cubs—each just nine weeks old—were examined by the zoo’s veterinary team and keepers. During the health check, the team determined the cubs’ sexes, fitted them with microchips, wormed them, and administered vaccinations for cat flu.

“They basically receive the same vaccines that a pet cat is given when it’s taken to the vet,” explained Tim Rowlands, Curator of Mammals. “The only difference is we’re much more cautious about handling the cubs than we would be with domestic kittens.”

Each cub was also weighed and given a thorough physical examination to ensure they were healthy.

Veterinary Officer Livia Benato shared the good news: “The cubs received a physical examination to check they are healthy and in good body condition. Happily, all three cubs—all girls—have been given a completely clean bill of health.”

The revelation that all three cubs are female delighted Keeper Alan Woodward, who commented: “It’s fantastic that we have three little angels as opposed to three wise men this Christmas.”

The arrival of these cubs is a crucial success for Chester Zoo and the European breeding program for Sumatran tigers. With fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers believed to remain in the wild, the species faces severe threats from poaching and habitat loss.
