The California Valley quail thrives in grasslands, chaparral, and oak woodlands throughout the western part of the state. In 1957, its scientific name was changed from Lophortyx California to Callipepla California, following a study by biologist Joseph Grinnell.

His observations of the bird’s features and behaviors led to its reclassification under the Callipepla genus, a change now widely accepted by ornithologists.
