For years, Hazel, a Pit Bull, lived in darkness, unable to witness the world around her. But her life took a hopeful turn when her foster parents revealed she would undergo an operation to restore her sight.
Hazel’s story is one of resilience and transformation. She was initially rescued from a New York backyard breeding horror where her previous owners, only concerned with profit, neglected her health. This led to Hazel giving birth to puppies with health defects, but a group of compassionate rescuers from Mr. Bones & Co. and Rescue the Runway intervened to change her fate.
When they found Hazel, she was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition that left her weak and despondent. Her foster parents, Samantha and Rob, alongside a supportive network including Leslie, Pete, and Lorraine, surrounded Hazel with care and affection, which she desperately needed to heal.
Despite her blindness, Hazel quickly endeared herself to everyone around her. With the support of the #OneLuckyPup program, she gradually evolved from a timid pup into one full of life, confidently maneuvering through her foster home.
Restoring Hazel’s vision initially seemed out of reach, but the possibility became real when veterinarians assessed that surgery could help her see again. Her journey included three hospitalizations and two surgeries to tackle serious health issues, such as pyometra—a potentially fatal uterus infection.
Thanks to the committed veterinarians at Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Hell’s Kitchen and The Animal Medical Center, Hazel successfully underwent cataract surgery and received artificial lens implants. To her joy and that of her caregivers, Hazel could see the world once more. Her remarkable transformation was accompanied by a bright smile as she soaked in her vibrant surroundings.
Although Hazel regained her sight, her journey wasn’t over. She continued to manage her diabetes, receiving daily insulin injections. Yet, with the unwavering hope of her rescue team, Hazel slowly prepared for adoption.
During her recovery, Hazel’s story caught the attention of a couple named Onalie and John, as well as their dog Cooper. Seeing her as the missing piece of their family, they eagerly completed the adoption process. Hazel soon became an integral part of their home, experiencing the joys of dog life she had missed for so long.
With her new family, Hazel gleefully explored new adventures, forming a tight bond with her brother, Cooper. They became inseparable companions, sharing daily play and exploration. Hazel’s journey from blindness and despair to sight and joy is a powerful testament to the transformative power of love and hope. Thanks to the commitment of her foster family, veterinarians, and new beloved family, Hazel now inspires everyone she meets, embodying the triumph over adversity and the beauty of second chances.
