While circuses generate joy and laughter for their audiences, the backstage narrative for these animals can be quite distressing.

Many undergo harsh training and face poor handler treatment, all in the name of learning new tricks.

This led Animal Defenders Incorporated (ADI), an organization committed to animal rights, to launch a global initiative, “Stop Circus Suffering.”

Together with several smaller advocacy groups, ADI made it their mission to dismantle the brutal practices of animal circuses worldwide.

After receiving distressing reports about a troupe of circus animals comprising nine tigers and two lions, ADI set out to liberate these creatures.

The organization’s leaders, President Jan and Vice President Tim, joined the team on this critical mission. They found a grim scene: two lions, Tarzan and Tanya, were confined in a tiny cage.

Tarzan and Tanya had spent most of their lives in these cramped conditions, which had left them physically and mentally scarred.

Tarzan’s lower lip was injured, likely from a fight with one of the tigers. But Tanya, despite her petite stature, had been there to protect him. “Tanya’s quite tiny, but she fought her heart out,” Jan shared with The Dodo.

ADI decided to intervene immediately, relocating Tarzan and Tanya to a spacious enclosure within their facility. Here, the lions could recover and start the journey towards a better life.

Initially, Tarzan was skeptical about his new surroundings. Still, with Tanya by his side and adequate care from ADI, he soon began to adjust.

In the weeks following their rescue, Tarzan and Tanya became familiar with their new environment, playing freely without the looming fear of their past life. Moreover, ADI ensured Tarzan’s injured jaw was treated to prevent further complications.

However, this was not their final destination. ADI planned to relocate the lions and the tigers to a permanent sanctuary in South Africa.

The trip involved four stops and a long flight, but eventually, the animals reached a place where they could live out their days in peace and tranquility.

The spacious new sanctuary was a significant upgrade from their previous confines. It offered a better life for all the rescued animals. Now, thanks to ADI, Tarzan, and Tanya can enjoy their freedom, secure in the knowledge that they are safe and have each other.
