Shelters are intended to be temporary spaces for dogs, a stepping stone to their forever families rather than a permanent home.
While some dogs find their new families quickly, others like Carter, who have a harder time standing out, wait for months, longing for attention.
This sweet eight-year-old dog, Carter, experienced the heartache of being overlooked time and again.
As he watched visitors pass his kennel, he hoped for a chance, his longing evident as he gazed through the bars of his enclosure.
Despite the lack of interest, Carter held onto his dreams, continuing to stand by the door of his kennel, waiting for someone to notice him.
Carter’s Journey
In August 2024, Carter was found in a parking lot and brought to the Greene County Animal Shelter in Ruckersville, Virginia.
Upon meeting him, the staff were immediately charmed by his friendly demeanor.
After checking for a microchip, they discovered his previous owners had surrendered him years earlier to a different shelter.
Sadly, that shelter was too crowded to take Carter back, leaving him at Greene County, still hopeful for a new family.
Months passed, and despite his sweet nature, Carter remained unnoticed by potential adopters.
It broke the staff’s hearts to see him waiting day after day without any interest.
Dreams Come True
Carter’s friends at the shelter were determined to change his fate.
On November 18, 2024, they shared his story and photo on Facebook, hoping to attract potential adopters.
“You can tell he was loved at one point in his life, but sadly no one is wanting to love him during his senior years,” the shelter wrote in their post.
His touching story resonated with many, who began supporting Carter’s quest for a loving home.
Then, a wonderful family reached out, eager to meet him.
After a successful meet and greet, they filled out the adoption application, excited to welcome him into their lives.
Carter was ecstatic to find his new family, ready to embrace a fresh start.
At last, he has the love he dreamed of, thriving alongside his new family and his doggy sibling Ethel, who was also adopted from the Virginia shelter.
