Abandoned Puppy Overcomes His Troubled Past with Help from Rescuers

A small, frightened puppy was discovered in a forest, chained to a tree with a large leather belt wrapped around his neck.

His condition was alarming: malnourished and terrified, it seemed clear that he had been abandoned with the intention of leaving him to die. There was no food or water, and the puppy appeared to be in severe distress.

“When we found him, it was clear that his previous life had been full of pain,” said Courtney Bello, Director of Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation at Sennar.

The puppy, later named Stuart, was brought to a shelter where he faced the difficult transition of being in a new, unfamiliar environment. For the first few days, he refused to move, hiding in a corner and trembling with fear.

“He didn’t want anyone to come near him. He was hiding and very scared,” recalled one of the shelter’s assistants.

Every time someone tried to approach him, Stuart would retreat, growl, and lower his head, behavior that indicated he had endured harsh treatment. His fear was so intense that the rescuers couldn’t even remove the heavy leather collar around his neck.

Stuart’s fear and anger were so overwhelming that the shelter team decided to give him time and space to adjust. “We thought it was best to let him rest,” explained Rebecca Rudd, one of the shelter staff members. Despite their efforts, Stuart remained withdrawn, barely eating, and too scared to visit the vet.

After some time, Courtney decided to put Stuart under anesthesia for a medical evaluation and to remove the collar.

Once the collar was taken off, the change in Stuart was immediate. “When we removed that heavy burden, he began to open up,” Courtney said. For the first time, Stuart seemed curious about the volunteers and even wagged his tail.

The removal of the collar was a significant turning point for Stuart, symbolizing the release from his traumatic past.
