After spending eight long years tied up on a concrete floor in a dark garage, a pit bull named Lola finally has all the comfort she deserves.
Neglected and kept on a leash without vet care or attention, her life turned when a woman found her and contacted AMA Animal Rescue, a New York-based animal welfare group.
The rescue team quickly persuaded Lola’s owner to surrender her, giving Lola a new chance at life.
Despite her harsh past, Lola greeted her rescuers with a friendly wag, earning the nickname “wavy butt” from AMA volunteer Michele Walsh.
“She was wagging her little tail, so friendly, kissing everyone and delighted to see her rescuers,” Walsh shared with The Dodo.
The team wasted no time unchaining her and took her to Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital, where she underwent surgery to remove some tumors. After her initial care, Lola was placed with a foster family for a few months.
Lola was then adopted by Charlène von Saher in Manhattan, where she finally found a cozy home. Von Saher recalls how Lola quickly located the softest spots, making herself home in just a few days. “She found her little beds and figured out where everything comfortable was,” von Saher told The Dodo.
Lola even took one of von Saher’s cushions to make a mini bed, showing a preference for layering her new sleeping arrangements. “She had made a mini-bed for herself with my pillow, like something out of ‘The Princess and the Pea,’” von Saher explained.
Now Lola enjoys the sun and often stacks two dog beds for extra comfort, a luxury she likely never experienced in the garage.
Von Saher is delighted to see Lola thrive, describing her as “improving daily.” She added that adopting Lola brought immense joy to her life and highlighted the impact of rescuing a dog.
“They often say that when you adopt a dog, you save two lives: the one you take in and the space you make for another dog at the shelter,” von Saher reflected.
Lola’s story is a testament to her resilience and the life-changing effect of compassion as she transforms from a neglected dog to a cherished family member.
