A veterinarian’s quick response recently saved a dog choking on a tennis ball. Dogs can become overly enthusiastic during playtime; in this case, the dog accidentally lodged the ball in its throat.
Despite our best efforts to protect our pets, unforeseen dangers can arise. Items like dog toys, if swallowed, can cause serious medical emergencies, potentially leading to tragic outcomes.

This risk was highlighted when Oprah Winfrey’s dog Gracie tragically passed away after choking on a plastic ball.
Unfortunately, such incidents can happen to any dog, emphasizing the importance of knowing how to respond if your pet faces a similar situation.

Dr. Kristie Williams, a veterinarian, recently demonstrated a lifesaving technique that pet owners can use in emergencies like this.
The method, known as the external extraction technique, offers a non-invasive way to remove obstructions from a dog’s airway.
Here’s how it works: First, place the unconscious dog on its back. Straddle the dog and adjust its position based on its size.

Identify the location of the ball, trachea, and mandible. Once located, place your thumbs on either side of the trachea while securely holding the dog’s mouth and head.
Then, use your thumbs to push the ball out of the dog’s throat. This technique can effectively dislodge the obstruction and save your dog’s life.
Being aware of this method could make all the difference in an emergency, ensuring that a playful moment doesn’t turn tragic.
