Living without the unconditional love of a human is heartbreaking for stray dogs. They wander the streets, searching for food and hoping for a kind smile or a gentle touch. These dogs dream of finding a family to hug them and make them feel cherished.
Once rescued and brought to shelters, these dogs are grateful for food and shelter. They hope to meet their forever families who will make them forget their complicated lives on the streets.
Speck’s Story: From the Streets to Shelter
Speck, a stray dog, was taken to the Bullock County Humane Society in Alabama. Speck’s sweet and affectionate nature immediately captivated the shelter staff despite his rough past.
With visible scars from his time on the streets, Speck was a kind and trusting soul. He craved love and would stick his head and paws through the kennel bars whenever staff or visitors passed. He longed for human touch and would gaze lovingly at anyone who held his paw.
“All he wants is people’s love. He will reach out with his little hand and wants you to touch him and hold his hand. And he’s so sad when you walk off to finish cleaning or whatever you must do,” Desiray Miracle-Wilder, the shelter’s director, told The Dodo.
A Long Wait for a Forever Home
Since arriving at the shelter in 2018, Speck had been waiting for his forever home. Despite the long wait, he never lost hope and continued to reach out his paw for some love. The shelter staff couldn’t understand why potential adopters overlooked him.
A Viral Video Changes Everything
In 2020, Wilder decided to film Speck holding hands with the shelter staff to show the world how much love he had to give. The video was shared on the shelter’s Facebook page and quickly went viral, touching many hearts.
Carly McDanal, founder of Allie’s Hope For Paws Dog Rescue, saw Speck’s video and decided to help him find a home. Soon, Speck was matched with a perfect forever home on a 26-acre farm in New York.
Speck’s New Beginning
Excitement filled the air as Speck left his kennel. He traveled by plane for the first time, accompanied by a doggy friend who helped him stay calm. After landing, he continued his journey by car to meet his new parents, Danielle and Mike.
When Speck finally arrived, his new parents welcomed him with open arms and fell in love instantly. Speck felt like the happiest dog in the world, finally finding the love he had always sought.
Now, Speck enjoys running and going on walks with his doggy brothers. But what he loves most is snuggling with his parents, who can’t get enough of his sweet kisses and hugs.
