In 2006, animal behaviorist and advocate Colleen Paige established National Pet Day to highlight the challenges faced by overcrowded animal shelters and to inspire people to adopt pets in need. Celebrated annually on April 11, this day serves as a reminder to appreciate our beloved pets and support those without homes.
Animal shelters and rescues are overwhelmed with many animals hoping to find a permanent home. Cats and dogs, especially larger breeds and those with special needs, often spend extended periods waiting for adoption.

One charming dog, Pepe, who only has one eye, has been at the Everett Animal Shelter for over 75 days, showcasing incredible resilience. He arrived earlier in the year after being hit by a car. Despite requiring emergency surgery to remove an injured eye, Pepe’s determination and spirit have shone through during his recovery at the shelter.
Though his sight is limited, Pepe isn’t letting it slow him down. According to his dedicated caretakers, “He’s adjusting to life with one eye pretty quickly. This energetic pup enjoys playtime, cuddling, and receiving affection from his favorite people despite his traumatic experience. Now, he’s searching for a forever home.”

This year, Pepe stands as the ambassador for National Pet Day as efforts are made to prepare many shelter animals for adoption with special care packages. Each package will contain nutritious meals, vaccinations, a toy, and a cozy bed.
By sharing Pepe’s journey, you might help him connect with a special family. Moreover, all shelter pets deserve to experience the love we share with our furry companions. Consider donating to support the well-being of shelter cats and dogs, enabling them to find their future families.
