Have you ever wondered what a dog with a broken heart looks like? For Pamela, a dog who spent eight years living in a rundown doghouse in her family’s yard, life dramatically changed one day for the worse.

Pamela’s family was evicted from their home, leaving her behind to face an uncertain future. Janine Guido, the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, shared on Facebook how she found Pamela peering out from the only place she had ever known. “This is where she has lived for eight long years,” Guido expressed, explaining the situation that left Pamela homeless.

A local realtor alerted Guido about Pamela’s plight. Shortly after Guido arrived, the evicted homeowner placed Pamela in Guido’s car and returned inside to gather his belongings. Initially, Pamela was frightened by the sudden upheaval in her life; she cowered in her crate, her tail tucked tightly beneath her, and growled softly. Though she bore no physical injuries, the emotional scars from her experiences were profound, Guido noted.

Having helped many traumatized dogs in the past, Guido knew Pamela needed love, comfort, and patience to heal. Pamela also required a visit to the vet for sores developed from living in poor conditions. “When I talk to her, she just shakes in fear,” Guido wrote, touched by the fear and uncertainty in Pamela’s eyes.

Remarkably, within a few days, Pamela’s demeanor began to shift. Initially cautious, she soon began showing affection, even giving Guido gentle kisses. Daily walks with Guido helped Pamela adjust to her new life, revealing her capacity to trust and feel safe again.

“During our walk this morning, she stayed by my side, rarely moving more than a foot away,” Guido described in a heartwarming update. “Every few steps, Pamela would turn to look at me, jump up, and wrap her legs around my waist. When I knelt down, she started kissing my face, almost as if she was saying, ‘I’m OK now.’ These are the moments you live for.”

Despite Pamela’s rapid progress, all involved are committed to taking things slowly, ensuring she becomes comfortable with herself before encountering further changes. “She will receive full veterinary care and stay with us as we learn more about her preferences,” Guido shared with The Doglovers. “We hope she’ll be ready for a new family in the near future.”
