Why is it that those who seem to have every reason to give up often display the most remarkable resilience? This thought struck me after learning about Hugo’s incredible journey.
Hugo started his life in unfortunate circumstances, abandoned alongside his two siblings in a public restroom. As a puppy with special needs, he seemed to have little to look forward to. However, when given a second chance, Hugo embraced life with an open heart.
His story highlights a significant point—many of us may not truly appreciate life until faced with adversity. If we could see the world through Hugo’s perspective, we might feel more grateful for what we have.
Hugo faced numerous challenges early on. Only a few weeks old, he was left by those he trusted most. Struggling in a public restroom as a special-needs puppy, Hugo was unable to care for himself. Fortunately, compassionate strangers couldn’t bear to leave him there. Soon enough, Hugo found refuge in Karey’s foster home in Florida.
At his first veterinary check-up, Hugo was diagnosed with several health issues, including spinal inflammation that left his hind legs impaired, as well as dwarfism and immune deficiency. “Hugo was born with spinal inflammation, unable to use his back legs… He is immune compromised and he doesn’t heal; his body betrays him,” Karey shared on Instagram.
Despite these challenges, Hugo’s love for life was remarkable. He thrived in Karey’s home, surrounded by his siblings. With his cheerful presence, he became an uplifting spirit in the household. This led to the inevitable—his adoption by Karey. After a year of care, Karey decided Hugo was meant to stay. “I officially made this little meatball a permanent part of my heart. He was finally medically cleared to go to his forever home, and after being his medical foster for a year of ups & downs there was no way I could let him go,” Karey expressed.
Today, Hugo is a living miracle, breaking expectations while brightening the world around him. Despite his health struggles and limited life expectancy, Hugo remains vibrant and full of joy. “He is a miracle because of all the medical issues and what he has overcome in his short life; he has magic super powers because he spreads joy and makes everyone happy,” shares his proud owner.
Adding to his accomplishments, Hugo is now a certified therapy dog. He visits schools and hospitals, teaching people of all ages that differences are perfectly normal. As a special-needs dog, Hugo embodies the message that everyone can find joy, love, and purpose.
With his loving family by his side, Hugo lives life to the fullest, defying the odds. Although his time may be shorter, Hugo is determined to soak up every moment, making friends, embarking on adventures, and creating cherished memories.
